Toyota’s new third generation Prius will be the "world’s most technically advanced mainstream car", the marque has asserted.

Additionally, it will demonstrate the benefits of the Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain in real-world terms, delivering "emphatic improvements" in driving performance, ecological responsibility and fuel efficiency, the manufacturer said yesterday.

The new vehicle’s engine is capable of running on petrol, the in-built electric motor, or a combination of the two.

Power has been increased by 22 per cent to 134 bhp, fuel economy is upped by ten per cent to 72.4 mpg according to the official combined cycle and CO2 emissions are down 14 per cent to 89g/km, exceeding Euro 5 emissions standards.

"It is said that when you are at the top, the only way you can go is down. Not so for the remarkable Toyota Prius," Toyota concluded.

Earlier this month, the marque announced that it had retained its position as the most environmentally-friendly vehicle producer in a poll by Business Car magazine.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19145825-ADNFCR
