DfT issues text trouble campaign
Damaging car lights could be the least of a driver’s worries if they send texts when behind the wheel, the Department for Transport (DfT) has warned.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick announced made his comments at the launch of a new campaign to outline the dangers of texting while in control of a vehicle.
He said it does not matter how competent a person is behind the wheel, if they are using a handheld device while on the road, they are not giving the traffic their full attention.
"The message that mobile phones and driving should not mix is getting through to the majority of drivers but some people are still needlessly risking their own lives and putting others in danger for the sake of a text or a call," Mr Fitzpatrick added.
He concluded by reiterating his message that mobile phones should not be used when driving.
A radio advert to reinforce the message will be launched on May 4th.
Last month, transport secretary Geoff Hoon secured a change in the law that will allow patriotic motorists to display national flags on their number plates.
