BMW ‘to carry on rolling out SmartBeam’
BMW is continuing to roll out its SmartBeam features across its product line, it has been asserted.
Enoch Jen, senior vice-president of Gentex, made his comments as the company also announced that its interior auto-dimming mirrors for the 2009 BMW Z4 Coupe/Roadster and 1 Series are now available.
SmartBeam uses a small camera on a chip that combines with algorithmic decision-making in order to automatically turn a motor’s car headlight bulbs off and on according to surrounding traffic conditions.
It is designed to maximise the forward lighting of a vehicle and eliminate the "repetitive and often burdensome" task of switching high-beam car lights on and off, Gentex states.
Mr Jen said: "The addition of SmartBeam to the BMW 1 Series and Z4 Roadster in Europe demonstrates how SmartBeam is migrating toward smaller, high-volume vehicles."
Yesterday, Gentex announced the shipment of its one-millionth SmartBeam system since it began dispatching the car lights-focused products in 2004.
