Volvo to develop new plug-in hybrid

Vehicle manufacturer Volvo is developing a car which can be fuelled using electricity from a standard wall socket.

According to Volvo, the vehicle, which is being developed in conjunction with Swedish energy company Vattenfall, "will be a reality in 2012".

Stephen Odell, president and chief executive of the Volvo Car Corporation, commented: "This is an important business development for us and our partnership with Vattenfall allows us to take a giant step toward offering our customers cars with an even smaller environmental footprint."

Lars G Josefsson of Vattenfall said the company wants to enforce the importance of electricity in helping to combat climate change.

In other news which may be of interest to those shopping for car bulbs, Toyota last week announced that it is pioneering the use of ecological plastic in its new Prius model.
