With the economic downturn to contend with, those buying new cars will no doubt be looking for a vehicle which offers good value and, according to new figures, the Mini Cooper does just that.

Prices compiled by British Car Auctions (BCA) show that the Mini is "one of the strongest performers in holding its value".

The average price paid for a 2004 Mini Cooper with 36,000 miles on the clock is £7,300, with the car retaining 63 per cent of its original worth.

BCA PR manager Tim Naylor said the cars have great character and "massive appeal".

"The Mini’s success continues to grow and we expect to see plenty of demand at auction as people celebrate 50 years of Britain’s favourite small car," he added.

Meanwhile, two special edition models will go into production later this year.

The Mini 50 Mayfair will capture the traditional features of the classic car, while the Mini 50 Camden will have a sleek and futuristic feel, with Xenon headlights.
