Volkswagen Golf ’still number one’

The Volkswagen Golf is still dominating car sales in Europe, according to car data provider Jato Dynamics.

Although year-to-date new car sales are down 13.1 per cent, registrations were up 2.4 per cent in May, compared to the previous month.

Figures show that Volkswagen Golf sales rose by 31.2 per cent during May, compared to the same month in 2008.

Scrappage schemes, such as the ones launched in Germany and the UK, are beginning to have a positive impact on the market, Jato noted.

David Di Girolamo, a spokesman for the company, said: "It’s far too early to know what the sustained effects of the incentives will be, but at a time when the industry needs to see some rays of hope, it’s encouraging to witness some improvement."

Other car models that have performed well include the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 207 and Vauxhall Corsa.

In related news, figures released recently by British Car Auctions show that the price of used vans bounced back in May after slipping slightly during April.
