Responsible young drivers 'should be rewarded'

Young motorists who take courses to improve their driving skills should be rewarded, it has been claimed.

Hugh Bladen, a founding member of the Association of British Drivers, said that although some insurance companies offer lower premiums to those who do courses, something should be done on a larger scale.

"If the government was sensible, it would give people plus points instead of minus if they’ve passed some sort of accredited improvement course," he commented.

Further education for drivers is essential, Mr Bladon added, because passing a driving test is just the start of the learning process.

According to figures from the AA, one in five drivers is involved in a crash during their first year on the road.

Research also shows that male motorists under the age of 21 are ten times more likely to have an accident than male drivers over 35.

At present, one in eight UK drivers si under the age of 25.
