Road casualty statistics 'show improvement'

The government’s provisional road casualty statistics for 2008 have been welcomed by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

According to the figures, which were released earlier this week, the number of people killed on British roads in 2008 was down by 14 per cent on the previous year.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the IAM, said the government has placed a strong emphasis on road safety since 2000.

"However, the government, councils and police simply cannot continue to reduce deaths on the Britain’s roads on their own," he commented.

If road safety is to be improved dramatically, motorists must take more responsibility and treat driving as a skill for life, Mr Greig furthered.

In related news, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recently voiced concern over the safety of young people driving at work.

The organisation noted that those who drive as part of their job face higher risks than other road users.
