Fog conditions lead to fatal crash in County Durham

A crash involving 31 vehicles on the A19 in Country Durham has led to the death of one driver and the injury of ten people.

The dense fog conditions led to three crashes on the road between Peterlee and Wellfield and the most serious involved the collision of two petrol tankers, two HGVs and a car. There were also initial concerns that leaked fuel could cause even more problems for motorists.

Inspector Ken Pullen of Durham Police explained: "It seems the vehicles have been driving in fog, but were then confronted by an even thicker band of fog which has resulted in one of them slowing right down."

Hazardous conditions such as fog increase the need for drivers to ensure that their car light bulbs including their fog lamps are in fully working order.

Recent figures from the government reveal that provisional road casualty statistics for 2008 show a 14 per cent decrease in the number of people killed on British roads.
