Male drivers 'pay more'

Male motorists can expect to pay around £17,000 more in a lifetime for car insurance than their female counterparts.

Figures from Moneysupermarket.com show that the average male driver pays £743 per year for car insurance, compared to women who pay £454.

Mark Sweeney, head of home and motor insurance at the site, said the gap between men and women premiums begins to narrow once drivers are of pensionable age.

"Quite obviously sex and age discrimination continues to be rife in the motor insurance industry, and it comes as no surprise policies for the ‘riskier’ younger generation and ‘boy racers’ are pricier," he commented.

Finding motor insurance can be tricky and drivers should shop around for the best deals, Mr Sweeney furthered.

In related news, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association warned drivers earlier this week that cutting back on car maintenance and driving on worn tyres could invalidate their insurance in the event of an accident.
