Drivers warned over flash flooding
With the UK’s recent heatwave coming to an end, drivers have been warned that they could face flash flooding in some parts of the country.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said torrential rain could make it harder to control cars and lead to poor visibility slippery road surfaces.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger explained: "A suddenly very wet road surface increases the chances of slipping when braking or steering, which is a problem not just for motorists, but cyclists and motorcyclists too."
Motorists forced to drive through deep water are advised to keep their revs high and not take their foot off the accelerator.
Mr Rodger said drivers should also be aware that stopping distances increase when conditions are wet.
Visibility is also reduced when it is raining and motorists should ensure they use their headlights and windscreen wipers, he added.
Temperatures reached 32 degrees C in some parts of the country this week, with many places experiencing their hottest days of the year so far.
