Drivers 'not prepared for European roads'

Millions of Brits are set to take to the roads of Europe this year. However, a recent survey carried out by the RAC revealed that many motorists are unprepared for the challenge of driving in a foreign country.

Of those polled, 35 per cent said they would not know what to do if they were involved in an accident abroad, while 70 per cent do not know the correct number of the emergency services in the country they plan to visit.

Almost half of motorists mistakenly believe that petrol is cheaper on the continent. However, those shopping for car bulbs and wiper blades may be interested to learn that fuel is generally more expensive in countries such as France, Germany, Belgium and Italy than it is in the UK.

RAC patrol manager David Hawes, commented: "It’s also crucial to swot up on European driving laws before you go to avoid any pitfalls."

In related news, a recent study by insurance provider Aviva revealed that 40 per cent of motorists experience a personality change when they get behind the wheel.
