Highway Code ‘needs to be changed’
The number of road traffic accidents on the country’s roads could be reduced if changes are made to the Highway Code, it has been claimed.
According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), accidents could be avoided if the Highway Code contained more information on how to behave around lorries and large vehicles.
James Hookham, policy director at the FTA, said it is unfair to make lorry drivers the "scapegoats" when they are involved in road incidents.
"Whenever there is an accident, or even a near-miss involving a lorry, the common assumption is that the lorry driver is at fault," he commented.
However, few drivers are aware of how much clearance they need to give large vehicles, Mr Hookham furthered.
In related news, a survey carried out recently by British insurance firm Aviva revealed that 40 per cent of motorists experience a personality change when they step inside their vehicles and often take risks that they would not take in everyday life.
