Tailgaters ‘are most annoying drivers’

Tailgaters 'are most annoying drivers'

Driving too close to the car in front is the most annoying thing a motorist can do, new research has revealed.

In a survey carried out as part of the Autocar AA Better Drive Campaign, 36 per cent of respondents said tailgaters are the most annoying road users.

AA president Edmung King said tailgating is the cause of many major crashes and is a problem on all roads, not just motorways.

"Some tailgate to bully drivers out of the way, others because they just don’t think of the potentially tragic consequences of their actions," he added.

According to the AA, driving too close to other vehicles is the cause of approximately 16 per cent of motorway accidents.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by Sainsbury’s Finance revealed that 69 per cent of motorists have engaged in potentially dangerous behaviour when driving.

Those shopping for car headlights and wiper blades may be interested to learn that 32 per cent of people have driven when tired, while 11 per cent of people have sent a text message from the driving seat.

This is very true. My worst (and all-too-common) experience is this: you’re driving up the motorway, radio on, you’re humming along to the music, it’s a nice day, you’re spinning along nicely. But what’s this? Why, it’s a hatchback doing about 30. On the MOTORWAY, God save us. So you pull out to overtake, and the next thing you know you’ve got a BMW or Audi (and it’s always one of those) in your rear mirror coming up your rear end at about 115, obviously thinking they’re auditioning for a part in the next Bond film. You were quite happy sticking to the speed limit but, not really fancying your bumper smashed to pieces by German chrome, you add a bit of gas. Only to find that the car you were trying to overtake has SPED UP! Gah.

I once was driving along.. following a friend… and my phone vibrated….. and then my friend stook her hand out of the window… I had no idea what she was doing. Then my phone went again… when we came to the traffic lights – I looked at my phone. The first text said ‘We’re about to reach my Uni on the right’ and the second simply ‘that was it’.

At that point, I realised my friend was a maniac :P .

She has been involved in 2 car accidents in the 3 months since.

    Coincidence?
