Fraudulent insurance claims ‘on the rise’

Fraudulent insurance claims 'on the rise'

Insurance provider esure said it plans to increase its fraud team by a third in order to tackle an increasing number of claims.

Figures released recently by the Association of British Insurers revealed that fraudulent claims have increased by 24 per cent in the last two years.

According to esure, the economic downturn has led increasing numbers of people to start fabricating car thefts and claiming for unrelated damage when they are involved in collisions.

Many motorists have also inflated their claims and told insurers they had extra items in the boot of their vehicles.

Gordon Hannah, director of claims and operations at esure, said: "Left untackled, this type of fraudulent activity will have a knock-on effect of increasing premiums for millions of honest motorists and homeowners across the UK."

In related news, research published by the AA last week revealed that 80 per cent of motorists have had their vehicle damaged when parked.
