Research carried out by the motoring organisation revealed that, on average, 13.4 per cent of family outgoings is spent on transport, with 83 per cent of this used to pay for and run cars.
AA president Edmund King said that having a car is essential for most families. However, many motorists are finding it difficult to keep up with costs during the recession.
