Drivers 'must resist temptation to retaliate'

Motorists who find themselves the victim of tailgaters should resist the temptation to retaliate.

This is according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which warned drivers that slamming on the brakes will only create a hazard.

Commenting on the problem of tailgating, a spokesperson for the organisation said: "IAM research in the past has highlighted the vast range of problems associated with driving too fast [and] too close. It is best to always try to leave a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front."

Those who do find themselves being followed closely by another vehicle should try to change lanes at the earliest opportunity and allow the other car to move past, he added.

A recent poll carried out by the AA revealed that tailgaters are considered to be the most annoying road users in the UK.]

Of those polled, 36 per cent said it irritates them if another motorist drives too closely behind them.
