Car lights that can, without glare, illuminate 15 per cent further than the car headlight bulbs in current use have been designed by a Turkish professor.

Ophthalmology professor and former deputy in the national parliament Turhan Alcelik, whose car bulbs aim to provide up to 75-80 metres of illumination, may have come one step closer to inventing an ideal car light system.

Mr Alcelik said that he was motivated to design the new car light bulbs after his friend was involved in an accident due to being temporarily blinded by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle.

"In the following years, and 1995 in particular, I thought about inventing headlights that can illuminate farther without being blinding," he told Today’s Zaman.

In related news, the recent unveiling of Vauxhall’s new Astra revealed that the model features wing-shaped lighting to the rear as well as optional bi-xenon lights capable of varying degrees of intensity.
