Wiper blades ‘inspire Mercury-nominated artist’
Written by Fiona Mayers
Windscreen wiper blades have become an inspirational tool for one musician, who is currently in the running to take home the 2009 Mercury Music Prize.
Sweet Billy Pilgrim will be up against the likes of Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and La Roux at the ceremony next month and the band’s frontman – Tim Elsenburg – discussed his love of car parts with the BBC.
He explained that he hears music in a lot of areas that other people might overlook and often records sounds that he thinks could prove to be tuneful at a later date.
"The windscreen wipers on my van at the moment are making a quite interesting noise, which is quite rhythmic and I find myself recording that with my phone," he told the news provider.
Other contenders for this year’s Mercury Music Prize include Lisa Hannigan, Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas, the Horrors and Friendly Fires.
