One industry expert has asserted that it will be nearly impossible for people to have a vehicle and not have an insurance policy from 2011.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, explained that it is currently "very easy" to get away without being insured.
Indeed, recent figures from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) indicate that one in five young drivers take to the roads without protection.
However, he said that a new system of continuous insurance enforcement, which will systematically compare drivers’ details with those held on the DVLA registered keeper database and the Motor Insurance Database, which is managed by the MIB.
"If you have a vehicle and no insurance you are automatically sent that fine. That’s going to be launching in 2011 and that’s going to make it practically impossible to have a vehicle and not have insurance," Mr Trudgill concluded.
