‘Bad timing’ for fuel duty rise

Customers looking to buy car wiper blades might be interested to learn that the rise in fuel duty that came into effect yesterday has come at a bad time, according to one motoring expert.
Philip Gomm, a spokesperson for the RAC Foundation, which campaigns to secure a fair deal for responsible road users, said that imposing more taxation on motorists who are "struggling under the strain of the credit crunch" is "bizarre".
His comments follow the release of the Budget 2009 by the government, which authorises the Finance Bill to provide for changes in the rates of duty and rates of rebate on hydrocarbon oils and biodiesel, as well as the rates of duty on road fuel gases, bioethanol, del comma and fuel substitutes.
"There must be big question marks as to the point of this policy," stated Mr Gomm.
He added that many people drive for business and when every penny counts, the increase will hit firms "where it hurts".
