Harvest time may call for good car lights

Good car lights could prove crucial when navigating down rural roads in the dark during the coming weeks, if comments from one driving group are anything to go by.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists has highlighted the fact country lanes can be particularly hazardous at this time of year as a result of farmers harvesting their crops.

It explained moving produce from fields can often leave mud on roads, which increases the risk of skidding.

Chief examiner Peter Rodger said it is vital motorists remain vigilant.

He stated: "Statistically, rural roads are our most dangerous and observation is the key to safe driving."

When travelling along such byways at night, motorists may find good car lights can help highlight surface areas that may be particularly slippery.

Meanwhile, IAM recently said ensuring tyres have sufficient tread depth is another way drivers can reduce the likelihood they will be involved in skidding-related accidents.
