Checking tyres 'could prevent an accident'

Drivers who try and ensure their autos are as safe as possible by replacing worn windscreen wiper blades and car bulbs at the earliest opportunity may be well advised to ensure they do not neglect other important vehicle parts.

TyreSafe has claimed it is particularly important in autumn – when roads tend to be wetter – that motors offer sufficient grip.

It suggested in order to check this, drivers should carry out a simple test.

The group advised motorists to place a 20 pence piece into the main groves of a tyre.

If the outer band of the coin is still visible, drivers were warned the car part may need replacing.

Chairman Stuart Jackson said: "Tyres are the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road surface so it is essential that they are in a condition that allows them to perform properly."

Last month, The Institute of Advanced Motorists also highlighted the importance of checking tread depth.
