Motorists 'should carry spare car bulb kits'

Drivers have been encouraged to think about carrying spare car bulb kits in their vehicles.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said it is vital people are prepared for deteriorating weather conditions and darker evenings.

As well as purchasing bulbs for emergencies, drivers were also advised to clean front and rear car lights to ensure they provide the highest levels of illumination possible.

In addition, motorists were urged to turn on their headlamps as soon as visibility starts to dip, rather than waiting for full darkness to descend.

Replacing worn windscreen wiper blades was another recommendation made by the group, along with topping up washer reservoir fluid.

Chief Examiner Peter Rodger also claimed motorists may need to slow down as winter approaches.

He stated: "Drivers should remember that speed limits are not targets. They are there as a guide for driving in optimum conditions."

Earlier this month, IAM warned cold weather can affect the performance of car batteries.
