Drivers advised to stay calm on the roads

Motorists can become stressed by anything from a faulty car bulb to a flat tyre but, as part of National Stress Awareness Day, Lancashire County Council is giving advice on how to keep stress free on the roads.

Speaking to aboutmyarea.co.uk, Neil Cunliffe, Lancashire County Council’s Road Safety Group manager, emphasised the importance of staying calm when out on the roads.

"The more stressed and angry you become, the more likely you are to make careless decisions and you run the risk of being involved in a crash," he said

Mr Cunliffe said Stress Awareness Day is a good opportunity to look at ways to release some tension and stay relaxed behind the wheel.

"Just a few small changes to the way you drive can make a big difference on our roads," he added.

The Road Safety Group’s top tips include not over-reacting to another driver’s mistake or getting into conflict with them. It recommends staying calm and thinking logically – hand gestures, headlight flashing or sounding the horn will serve no purpose and may make the situation worse.

According to the group, the government has set challenging targets for road casualty reduction compared to the average for 1994-98 including a 40 per cent reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19442744-ADNFCR
