Satnav for lorries launched

A lorry-friendly satnav system is now available from the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

Car headlight bulbs help drivers to avoid accidents at night, but even with the help that they provide lorries are being led into danger by satnav systems that do not recognise their dimensions.

With the TomTom GO 7000 lorry drivers can avoid narrow roads, low bridges and unsuitable routes.

FTA policy manager James Firth said that the company challenged the satellite navigation industry to develop a product aimed at HGVs over two years ago.

"The result is a product that is more appropriate for HGVs and will help drivers to avoid obstacles on their delivery routes, saving money and time and preventing chaos along our urban and rural road networks," said Mr Firth.

He said it also has a greater bias for motorways and major roads meaning it will usually avoid sending large vehicles down small country lanes.

According to the Department for Transport, used correctly, satnav systems have the potential to ease congestion, reduce fuel consumption and improve road safety.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19471363-ADNFCR

I never thought about the difficulties for lorry drivers using normal sat navs. I would have thought experianced lorry drivers would know where to avoid anyway.
