Don't be in the dark over car safety this winter

With figures revealing that a third of serious or fatal accidents happen in the dark, motorists are being urged to ensure their car lights are doing their job this winter.

As more drivers take to the roads over the festive season, moneysupermarket.com is urging people to be prepared for the hazardous conditions.

Last year, snowy and icy conditions contributed to almost 4,500 accidents, highlighting the importance of keeping vehicles in good condition and taking out car insurance and breakdown cover.

"Taking regular precautionary measures such as checking the oil level, anti-freeze, hazard lights and tyres for tread depth and pressure, and stowing a spare tyre in the boot of your car are a good idea," advised Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at the website.

Motorists should check their vehicles regularly and carry a torch, reflective triangle sign, high-visibility jacket, first aid kit and jump leads, he added.

Heavy rainfall is also putting road users at risk, with esure urging people not to drive into water if they cannot tell the depth or see the route out.
