Smartnav Mobile is now available on all the leading smartphones as well as Windows-based GPS mobile phones.
Smartphones including the iPhone, Nokia and BlackBerry can now receive satellite navigation information as well as live traffic information.
John Lawrence, sales and marketing director at Trafficmaster plc, hailed Smartnav Mobile as "one of the most significant developments in portable satnav technology for many years."
"Putting it on the leading smartphones makes Smartnav Mobile readily available as both a business and lifestyle application and will help motorists save time, fuel and mileage by keeping them on the best route at all times, avoiding congestion and unnecessary delays," he added.
Driving while using a mobile phone can be even more dangerous than driving with car bulbs that do not work, but, according to the Department for Transport, when satnav systems are used correctly in hands-free holsters, they have the potential to improve road safety.
It said that drivers who listen to satnav instructions while keeping their eyes on the road are likely to be less distracted than those that have to stop frequently to check a map or worse, those that try to use a paper map while driving.
