Business drivers ‘must keep up with car maintenance’
Drivers who use their own car for business purposes must be able to prove the vehicle is roadworthy and insured, it has been noted.
Everything from car bulbs and windscreen wipers to tyres and brakes must be in good condition and comply with legal requirements before they set off.
Employers should have a zero tolerance policy on staff who cannot show their car is correctly maintained and insured, advises John Lewis, chief executive of fleet and car hire trade body BVRLA.
Speaking at the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) Annual Grey Fleet Conference, he urged fleet operators to review their business travel arrangements and consider option such as teleconferencing and vehicle renting.
"OGC case studies show that public sector organisations have been able to save hundreds of thousands of pounds, reduce emissions and improve road safety by replacing much of their grey fleet with leased or rental vehicles," he commented.
