More people changing their own car bulbs

Written by Richard Sinclair.

DIY motor maintenance, such as changing car bulbs, is on the increase, according to Castrol.

The motor lubricant company said that 53 per cent of people are doing their own car repairs, compared to just 21 per cent last year.

Haynes, the publishers of car and motorcycle manuals, has long highlighted that motorists can do many simple tasks, such as replacing windscreen wiper blades or failed car bulbs, saving both time and money.

Matthew Minter, editorial director at Haynes Workshop Manuals, said: "There are many straightforward car maintenance jobs which all motorists should be capable of.

"They’re in the same category as frying an egg, ironing a shirt or changing a plug."

Haynes manuals illustrate how to do many maintenance jobs, such as checking fluid levels and the condition of tyres and the car battery. Each task is given a difficulty rating.

Last month a report from Kwik-Fit showed that one in five students have admitted to avoiding taking their car for a service and, as a result, driving an un-roadworthy car in order to save money for leisure pursuits.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19499563-ADNFCR
