TyreSafe advises drivers to check tyre tread and pressure

Car bulbs are not the only thing motorists should be checking before setting off on a journey this winter; correct tyre tread and pressure are very important too, according to TyreSafe.
Stuart Jackson, chairman at TyreSafe, said: "During the holiday period too many motorists suffer misery from tyre-related breakdowns because they haven’t made adequate checks before setting off."
He said that, especially when carrying extra weight, it is essential that tyre pressures are checked and adjusted so that they meet the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
Excess heat can build up in a tyre that is under-inflated and blowouts can occur.
A recent survey by TyreSafe found that, of 4,500 cars, 36 per cent had either dangerous or very dangerous pressure levels in their car tyres. It also found that six per cent had punctures.
Last month lovemoney.com advised motorists to check that their windscreen wiper blades were not worn before setting off on a journey, as worn wiper blades do not function correctly in heavy rain.
