To make driving in poor weather easier, motorists should turn on their car bulbs if they cannot see further than 100 metres ahead, according to the Saga Group.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman at Saga Group, said that drivers should exercise "extreme caution" when driving in the dark or on wet or icy roads.

He advised motorists to turn on their fog car bulbs when they are needed but to be sure they are switched off when visibility improves.

"We urge all drivers to check the weather forecast before they venture out, and if they’re at all worried, to use alternative means of transport," Mr Goodsell added.

His advice follows the Saga survey of over 2,000 UK motorists conducted by Opinium, which found that 48 per cent of drivers are concerned about driving in poor weather.

The survey revealed that the biggest weather concern of UK motorists was driving in snowy or icy conditions.

Recently, TyreSafe urged motorists to check the pressure and tread depth of their car tyres before setting out on the roads this winter. If either of these are incorrect, there is an increased risk of being involved in an accident on the roads.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19515358-ADNFCR
