Replace windscreen wiper blades every year, motorists advised

Motorists should change their window wipers every year, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), as old or worn windscreen wiper blades are not as effective in keeping the glass clear in heavy rain.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said that dirty windscreens make it more difficult for motorists to see the road ahead, which can already be difficult during the low sun that is present in the morning and late afternoon in the winter months.

"Your heater is often on demist, blowing traffic fumes, suspended oil and smoke onto the inside of the screen which quickly builds to a film of grime which is a major cause of glare," he explained.

Mr Rodger added that the wet weather means that more dirt collects on the outside of the windscreen too. He said that the "best solution" is to clean both sides of the glass at least once a week.

Earlier this week, results of a survey of over 2,000 motorists, conducted for Saga Group, found that 48 per cent are concerned about driving in bad weather such as snow, ice and heavy rain.
