Avoid accidents and broken car lights by checking tyre tread

One in ten motorists are driving with illegal tyres that do not meet the minimum required tread depth of 1.6mm and are risking causing accidents and car damage, such as broken car lights, according to a recent study.
A survey, conducted by Kwik-Fit found that, not only are ten per cent of motorists driving with illegal tyres, but one in six would be unprepared if they broke down on the winter roads.
"When it comes to being stranded, it makes sense to prepare for the worst and carry items that will make lengthy waits in the cold weather more bearable," said David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit.
Despite this advice, 95 per cent of motorists head out on journeys without a flask of hot drink and 60 per cent do not carry an in-car mobile phone charger.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recommends that worn tyres are replaced as soon as they wear below 3mm.
