Check car lights before heading off on Valentines weekend, motorists advised

Couples planning a romantic getaway over the Valentines weekend should check their car lights are all functioning before heading off down lovers lane, according to GEM Motoring Assist.
The recent weather has caused the UKs roads to fall into disrepair, with cracks and potholes littering the tarmac, so the breakdown organisation is recommending that motorists steer clear from smaller roads.
David Williams, chief executive of GEM Motoring Assist, said: "Our aim is to help make road users journeys run as smoothly as possible and avoiding a breakdown can be simple if drivers follow sensible guidelines."
GEM advised that, before setting off on a journey, drivers should ensure their car boot is packed with emergency supplies, including a torch, hazard triangle, rug, jump leads, a bottle of water and fluorescent and reflective jacket.
For those not heading off for a romantic weekend later this month but who are taking their cars in for an MOT, Lancashire County Councils road safety group has advised checking car light casings are not cracked to avoid failing the test on minor points.
