Ford has prevented 23,000 damaged car bumpers from entering landfill sites by recycling them into other plastic components, which could include car light casing.

The bumpers would have created around 70 tonnes of landfill but, instead, were stripped from accident-damaged cars and recycled.

Stephen Russell, operations director for the Ford Ringways dealership, explained that, before the scheme, old bumpers had to be put in the skip and it was down to the dealers to pay for their removal.

Now Ford collects the bumpers free of charge, which saves Ford Ringways around £15,000 a year.

Mike Rivers, Fords end of life vehicle manager, said: "Our UK bumper recycling scheme has been another Ford environmental success, with thousands of bumpers retrieved from Ford dealers and recycled into new plastic parts last year."

Research conducted recently for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders found that UK automotive plants are increasingly seeking locally-built components, such as plastic mouldings for car lights.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19606326-ADNFCR
