Car lights should be used during daytime

Motorists should keep their car headlight bulbs illuminated even during daylight hours to help prevent accidents, a report has established.

According to the Road Safety Authority, low-beam headlights should be kept switched on in order to reduce collisions, the Irish Times reports.

This is a system which is already used in a number of European countries, including Italy, Norway and Sweden.

The organisation, however, anticipates that the scheme will prove costly as fuel consumption and air pollution are set to increase.

It would also mean that drivers have to replace their car light bulbs more frequently.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that in the third quarter of 2009, there was a seven per cent fall in the number of fatalities in road accidents compared to the previous 12 months.

Total casualties were down by five per cent, while the cases of serious injuries and fatalities declined by six per cent.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19612415-ADNFCR
