5% of UK motorists have broken car lights

Some five per cent of motorists are driving with broken car lights, recent research has revealed.

Breakdown service Britannia Rescue found that over five million British drivers are currently breaking the law by driving an unsafe vehicle.

The most common fault identified among these cars was worn tyres, with 12 per cent of motorists driving with tyres that have a tread depth of less than 1.6mm.

Britannia Rescue said that 180,000 of the five million un-roadworthy cars being driven on UK roads are still being used because their owners are holding out until they are eligible for the governments scrappage scheme.

Simon Stevens, general manager of Britannia Rescue, said: "Some repairs may appear to be minor but they could still turn a car into a death-trap that endangers the driver, passengers and other motorists."

Last month, Hyundai announced that it will still offer a £2,000 part exchange on new vehicles, even after the government scrappage scheme comes to an end.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19626101-ADNFCR
