Owners of cars that are five years old are the most likely to make a claim on their insurance for a cracked car light, new research suggests.

Virgin Money Car Insurances database shows that 40 per cent of car insurance claims come from the owners of vehicles aged three-to-six years old.

According to the companys figures, drivers with five-year-old cars are the most likely to contact their insurer, with 9.6 per cent of all motor claims being from this group.

Drivers with new cars less than a year old accounted for just over two per cent of all claims recorded.

Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money Car Insurance, said: "This is not to say that cars five years old are the most dangerous, but that they are more likely to be involved in an incident that leads to a claim being made."

He suggested that this could include cracked car lights or other damage caused in a traffic accident or claims that result from breakdowns or theft.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) recently confirmed that motor insurance policies would continue to cover owners of Toyota vehicles that were affected by the car companys recent recall.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19629823-ADNFCR
