Motorists may be obeying the law by using their car lights correctly, but a staggering number are still breaking it by using their mobile phones while driving, a study has shown.

Research by Halfords found that almost a third of drivers (31 per cent) admitted to answering a phone call while driving and over one in five (22 per cent) said they have made a phone call while behind the wheel.

Clare Pritchard, in-car technology expert at Halfords, said that the only way to ensure drivers use mobile phones legally and drive with due care and attention is for them to install hands-free devices.

"Whilst it is always better to pull into a safe place and stop the car before using the phone, hands-free means drivers can have the reassurance of a mobile phone whilst on the move," she said.

According to the Department for Transport, drivers who use a mobile phone while on the road are four times more likely to crash.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19641382-ADNFCR
