Motorists should wash car lights when they refuel

Motorists should wash their car lights when they stop for fuel in the spring and summer months to ensure they are clear of fly debris, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has advised.
Salt used on the roads over the winter months can act as a corrosive, causing rusting if it is left on the bodywork, so the IAM also advises drivers to take their vehicles to a car wash that specialises in under-car cleaning so that every trace can be removed.
Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the IAM, said: "After a long winter of wear and tear through snow, salt and potholes – and now volcanic dust – your car will be in need of a little TLC."
He went on to say that making basic vehicle checks now and dealing with any minor problems and repairs as they happen can save a lot of money in the long run.
Kwik-Fit is offering free vehicle checks, which could include a car lights examination, to AA members in the run up to the May Day bank holiday.
The AAs roadside patrols are to be affected by strike action over that weekend so Kwik-Fit hopes its chacks will put motorists minds at rest a little before they head out on the roads.
