Tests of car bulbs and other controls will be completed prior to the official roll out of the new Vauxhall Ampera, after the first pre-production car rolled off the assembly line in the US.

The Ampera is not expected to be available on the European markets until next year, after further validation tests are carried out on the vehicles.

Software controls, as well as safety performance and structural integrity tests will be carried out prior to the launch.

Andrew Farah, vehicle chief engineer for Ampera, said: "Theres still work to be done, but being able to drive an Ampera off our pre-production line is a great accomplishment for the teams here and in Europe."

Earlier this month, Vauxhall was commended for the quality of its lighting system by insurance company Allianz.

The car manufacturer won the Genius 2010 prize for its car light bulbs, which significantly reduce the risk of accidents at night and dusk for other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.ADNFCR-2370-ID-19743044-ADNFCR
