Drivers fall foul of potholes despite using car lights

Even fully functional car lights cannot prevent drivers from hitting potholes, research from the Fuelcard Company has suggested.
The firms study revealed that 14 per cent of drivers in the UK have had an accident after swerving to avoid a pothole, which equates to around 5.5 million people.
Following this revelation, the company is now calling on the next government to make road maintenance a post-election priority.
Jakes de Kock, marketing director of the Fuelcard Company, said: "These results show just how serious the road maintenance issue is becoming for motorists and the government should be making the UKs pothole repairs a priority before another tragedy occurs."
He suggested that road maintenance is one of the most important motoring issues but that it does not get enough attention from the media or politicians.
Last month, the Institute of Advanced Motorists advised drivers to give their vehicles a bit of extra care following the harsh winter of "snow, salt and potholes".
It also recommended people to clean or replace old wiper blades as they can make a deafening sound and leave marks on the windscreen.
