Motorists must adapt driving techniques

Motorists have been warned that they must constantly adapt their driving techniques, even after passing their test, including their usage of car headlight bulbs and other features of the vehicle.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has pointed out that the "increasingly demanding" driving conditions in the UK, due to the volume of drivers and state of the roads, means that motorists must be experts when it comes to knowing how to deal with different situations.
This includes knowing how to use features such as car headlight bulbs in certain situations, for example not using full beams when they may dazzle other drivers, said Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner.
"Although cars are becoming easier to drive, traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex, so the driver needs far more understanding of whats going on outside the car," he explained.
The IAMs advice comes as it celebrates the 75th anniversary of the driving test, which first took place in 1935 when the pass rate was 63 per cent –a figure which has since dropped to 44 per cent.
