Vauxhalls new Corsa ecoFLEX, which has sweeping front car lights, is now on sale in the UK and is the first of the companys vehicles to feature Start/Stop technology.
This system means that the engine cuts off when the car is stationary at traffic lights or level crossings and then starts again when the driver applies pressure to the clutch and accelerator pedals.
The technology allows the new Euro 5-compliant 1.3 CDTi (75PS) models to achieve 70.6mpg, which is a seven per cent improvement on its predecessor.
People who use their cars frequently in towns or cities will see the biggest gains in terms fuel consumption – the vehicle has an official urban mpg figure of 58.9mpg, which is over 12.5 per cent more economical than the outgoing Euro 4 car.
Last month, Vauxhall announced that it had sold more than 55,000 of its other model, the Insignia, in the 18 months since its launch.
