Car Lights

February 4th, 2009

The term Car Lights can refer to many different applications of lighting on a car. Car lights could refer to the head lights, side lights, indicators, brake, reverse, exterior, interior….etc.

Headlight bulbs and front foglight bulbs are the largest bulb types on your car. These are typically 55-60W and produce the most light output of all car lights. Dipped beam car lights and main beam lights are actually the same type of bulb. Its often incorrectly believed that the main beam bulbs are actually a brighter, more powerful car light, but infact they are equally as powerful as the dipped beam. Often the same bulb type is used on both main and dipped beam applications.

Brake lights, rear fog lights, indicator lights and reverse lights are the next largest car lights. These are typically around 21W and are a filament based tungsten bulb. They commonly come with a metal, bayonet type base or a large wedge type base. With indicators, and in rare cases the brake light bulbs, the bulbs have a coloured coating on the bulb to produce the required colour of light. We have these bulb types available in LED upgrade bulbs which use much less power (typically between 1-5W).

Side light bulbs, number plate bulbs and interior bulbs are among the smaller car lights. These are usually rated between 4-10W with the most common being the 501 5W wedge type bulb.  Number plate and interior car light applications can often also use the festoon tubular type bulbs. All these bulb types are also available as LED bulbs.

The smallest of the car lights are the dashboard bulbs. These are very small and often come with a small plastic base which quater turns into place. They typically rate at 0.5-2W. We carry a large selection of dashboard bulbs.

When searching for suitable car lights, you need to first establish which application it is you need to replace. Once you have established this you can use our Bulb Finder guide located on our home page which will display all the available car lights on your vehicle.

Once you have selected your vehicle in our bulb finder guide, click on either the Upgrade or Standard button associated with the car light application you require. You will then be directed automatically to the page on our website which contains the bulbs available for your vehicle.

If you have any trouble finding the car lights required, please contact us and we will be glad to help you find the correct ones.
