20% of Brits do not make pre-travel car checks

One in five motorists in the UK has admitted that they will not bother doing any vehicle checks before setting off on their holidays this summer, Kwik-Fit research has revealed.

As there are approximately 20 million drivers registered in the UK, this equates to around four million motorists navigating the roads with potentially unsafe vehicles.

The research shows that, on the average domestic holiday, a family will cover 400 miles.

Some of the things that people should check are brake fluid levels, tyre tread depth and screen wash levels.

“Worryingly, brakes are one of the pre-travel checks most neglected by holidaymakers,” said Ian Fraser, chief executive at Kwik-Fit.

“And the importance of the spare tyre shouldnt be underestimated, as a full car on worn out rubber could spell disaster,” he added.

Last month, lovemoney.com advised motorists that they should also complete some simple vehicle checks before they take their cars in for an MOT.
