Police to gain drugalysers

Police forces across the UK are soon to gain drug-testing kits so that they can catch those who are under the influence of illegal substances.

The testing kits will be located at police stations initially, but it is hoped that they will be seen at the roadside in the near future.

This could reduce the number of people that take to the roads while under the influence, causing danger to themselves and other road users.

Road safety charity Brake has welcomed the news, claiming that the introduction of “drugalysers” is long-overdue.

“We need to be moving urgently towards roadside screening in the UK,” said Julie Townsend, campaigns director for Brake.

She went on to say that the law should be changed so it is an offence for a person to drive with illegal drugs in their body, so that police do not have to prove the drivers abilities are impaired.

Last month, a report on drink and drug-driving was published by the Department for Transport, recommending that the UK drink-drive limit be reduced to 50mg alcohol per 100ml blood.
