Most drivers do not check tyre pressures

The majority of drivers are putting themselves at risk on the roads by not checking their tyre pressures regularly, it has been claimed.

Schrader Electronics, a manufacturer of direct tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), said that up to 80 per cent of cars on the UK's roads have either over or under-inflated tyres.

Alfonso Di Pasquale, of Schrader Electronics, suggested that car dealers need to explain to customers the safety benefits of TPMS.

"The safety credentials for TPMS are well-known, accepted and supported by the European Union together with other independent research and safety organisations," he added.

Mr Di Pasquale went on to say that up to three per cent of road accidents could be avoided if tyres were inflated to the correct levels.

Earlier this month, Kwik-Fit research revealed that one in five motorists in the UK will not bother doing any vehicle checks before setting off on their holidays this summer.
