New Federal-Mogul design improves fuel economy

Federal-Mogul Corporation has launched an innovative two-piece oil ring design for direct-injection gasoline engines.

The patented LKZ oil control ring was originally developed for high-demanding diesel applications.

It reduces oil consumption by up to 50 per cent and friction by as much as 15 per cent, compared to the best conventional two-piece oil rings.

This leads to greater fuel economy, a reduction of CO2 emissions and longer oil life.

"There are very few technologies that provide such an easily implemented improvement in fuel economy and emissions reduction as LKZ rings," said Rainer Jueckstock, Federal-Mogul's senior vice president of powertrain energy.

Unlike typical piston rings, Federal-Mogul's LKZ ring applies a well-defined pressure to the cylinder bore on the down-stroke and a significantly less on the up-stroke.

Jaguar's latest offering – the Sentinel – was launched this week and is powered by a 5.0-litre 385PS AJ-V8 Gen III naturally aspirated direct-injection V8 petrol engine.
